Ophthalmology
A veterinary ophthalmologist specializes in diseases affecting the eye and vision, as well as structures surrounding the eye, such as the eyelids, conjunctiva, and some of the bones of the skull that comprise the eye socket. A veterinary ophthalmologist is uniquely qualified to make a diagnosis and solve the problem with a combination of medical and surgical treatments, many of which are procedures originally in human medicine that have become available for pets. Specialty accreditation is granted by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
BrightHeart veterinary ophthalmologists collaborate with general practice veterinarians on either a consultative or a full referral basis, as determined by the needs of the case and the wishes of the owner.
The following generally require the attention of a veterinary ophthalmologist.
- Cataracts
- Corneal ulcer
- Entropion
